you may have heard the classic line to
sail the seven seas and as romantic as
it might sound you should probably know
it’s not a very accurate saying a
because the Seas the Fraser first to our
oceans and B there aren’t seven oceans
there’s five the Arctic the Atlantic the
Indian the Pacific and the Southern
Ocean all one if you feel all the oceans
belong as one big ocean which some
people do and unsurprisingly call it the
wild ocean that’s not a very interesting
name but I guess it makes perfect sense
that you all do shion’s as one big ocean
unlike islands and continents that
aren’t clear-cut beginnings and ends for
them so how do we decide when one ocean
ends and another begins well there
doesn’t seem to be one definitive reason
as to why they have been divided the way
they have like a lot of country borders
they’re man-made divisions using the
opened crust and the continents to help
divide this one huge ocean but the other
issue with that saying is that it calls
the oceans seas and water turn ocean and
sea have become fairly interchangeable
there is a difference between the two
what oceans are the large of the two
seas a part of oceans specifically the
part of the ocean where they meet the
land and sea is tend to be surrounded by
land in example the Irish Sea which is
part of the Atlantic Ocean and sits
between the land masses of Ireland and
Great Britain with the Isle of Man
tucked within it and in regards to the
7c saying trust me there are more than
seven seas but anyway this is named
explain not ocean explain there is
however a cool small channel called the
abyss I stumbled across that doesn’t
make fun educational videos all about
the ocean so you should check them out
help us more crater and what not we are
here how to talk about how the five
oceans got their names and you know what
three of the five oceans don’t have the
most exciting names of course the word
ocean is in the name of all the Earth’s
oceans so let’s just cover it now as
opposed to explain every time the word
ocean itself has earliest-known roots in
the Greek Okeanos which was believed to
be the great freshwater stream that
encircled the entire disk earth the
Indian Ocean is named that simply
because of its location around the
Indian subcontinent
named after the country of India so how
did India Gates name yes I am speaking a
country name explained into this video
it’s believed the name India is a
corruption of the word Sindhu which was
supposedly the Sanskrit word for sea and
another name for the Indus River the
river that India is named after so yes
the Indian Ocean is an ocean named after
a subcontinent which is named after a
country which is named after a river
named section the southern ocean of
course too doesn’t have the most
thrilling name is the ocean in the south
or the word south are coming from the
proto-germanic son fast
possibly literally meaning the son side
yet the Southern Ocean has a couple
other names it is also known as the
Antarctic Ocean and the Austral ocean
Austral comes from the Latin word for
South Oster and the name the Antarctic
Ocean comes from the fact that the
oceans around Antarctica Antarctica
comes from the Greek word for opposite
the Arctic with Arctic coming from the
Greek word meaning near the bare
northern this is referred to one of the
two of bear-baiting northern
constellations I’m getting some serious
deja vu right now but with explaining
the etymology of antarctica and arctic
i’ve also explained where the arctic
ocean name comes from you guys totally
didn’t realize or sneaking another ocean
etymology in there did you
so while there are interesting stories
in those names none of those free oceans
have wholly unique names and are merely
named after where they are this of
course changes however with the Atlantic
and Pacific oceans the name of the
Atlantic Ocean has its origins in
ancient Greek mythology the oldest known
mention of Atlantic is in the histories
of Herodotus from around 450 BC however
it was Atlantis he wrote not Atlantic
Atlantis comes from the name of the
Greek Titan Atlas with Atlantis meaning
at the island of Atlas and in some
context the Sea of atlas yet the actual
ocean we know or hadn’t been recorded
yet Atlantis had only existed in mists
of the homeland to an advanced
civilization that sank beneath the ocean
first recorded in the writings of Plato
Plato and Homer however did allude to
the sea of Atlas as a mythical sea
beyond the pillars of Gibraltar but was
never confirmed to exist until the
Romans served upon it as a transport
route to Britain the name Atlantic Ocean
became more formally used by the Middle
Ages its name being a relic of Asian
past when people search for the lost
continent of Atlantis finally we have
earth’s largest ocean the pacific ocean
man mattes though doodling justice
anyway in 1519 spain wanted to find a
western route to the Spice Islands of a
South America and enlisted Portuguese
navigator Ferdinand de Magellan to find
this route after tackling dangerous
waters Ferdinand and his feats came to
unfamiliar calm waters he called these
waters specific meaning peaceful which
would later become the name we there as
today the Pacific Ocean weather an
oceans name it comes from Greek
mythology it’s peaceful waters or just
where it is in the world you can
guarantee that what in them will be
amazing and pretty terrifying hey there
